WWDC ‘06

August 8, 2006 · 1 Comment

Like just about every other person I was glued to Engadget yesterday waiting to see what his Highness Steve Jobs would unveil to us. And while the new Mac Pros are astoundingly fast machines, I must say I’m somewhat let down. Of the 10 Leopard features shown off only two caught my eye. First is of course “Time Machine” which looks awesome and the second being “Spaces“, not so much for it’s innovation but mainly because it’s about time OS X had virtual desktops.

Another feature not shown in the keynote that caught my attention is that Mail will now also be a RSS reader. Though I doubt anyone will be using it to replace NetNewsWire it’s about time Apple add this feature too.

The one thing that I kept waiting for was the announcement, or lack thereof, a new revised Finder. So I can only really hope that it’s one of the things Apple’s keeping a secret for now.

To see all of this yourself go check out the Keynote here.

Macbook Pro Problems

July 10, 2006 · No Comments

Let me preface this by saying that I love my Macbook Pro and wouldn’t want anything else.

That said, I have been one of many to have many problems with it, small and big. The first one I noticed was that the left magnetic latch didn’t come down and latch. Then I realized that the DVD drive was bust rejecting all but one blank DVD no matter what format and playing only a handful of DVD movies. And now most recently the battery shuts off without warning after 5-20min not to come back on until plugged in. The Magsafe adapter while great in idea the construction is terrible and is quickly falling apart and to top off the power troubles the batter is warped roughly 1/8in.

I’ll be sending it off for repair and we’ll see how it’s doing afterwards.

In other Apple hardware woes my 4G iPod has also died today. I got it for Christmas a year and half ago. I was hoping to wait and buy the new full-screen video iPod when Apple released it or an 8GB Nano. Alas neither have been realized and I need a new one.

Hopefully these hardware problems are not indicative of the overall quality of Apple products but from what I can tell it just maybe. Luckily for Apple it’s creating great products that make it worth putting up with the problems since AppleCare takes car of most of it.

The Stars Are Aligning

December 31, 2005 · No Comments

It seems as the title says the stars are finally aligning and we are growing ever closer to the release of the New Mac laptops with the Intel chips inside, err, it seems Apple will be leaping ahead by leaps and bounds with the introduction of the “Yonah” chipset.

First with Macworld coming on January 9th, some significant announcement can almost be expected. Second with Intel set to announce the new “Yonah” chipset on the 6th of January, one could be forgiven for jumping to conclusions. But one big question was about the Intel branding and with Intel’s announcement that they are finally dropping the “Intel Inside” branding and creating a new one (Intel Leaps Ahead) that shows their strengthening relationship with Apple.

All I have to say is I’m more than willing to beta test any of the laptops for ya Steve, just send me a email and I’ll be sure to put some good hours in. :-)
